| Description |
Most of the paintings in the National Gallery have details that might not
immediately catch your eye. Artists tend to draw the viewer to specific
parts of their pictures, and we are used to finding an unexpected detail in
the corner of a painting that we already know well. But some of the
paintings in the Gallery have details that are normally impossible to see.
These are details that are too small for the human eye to make out - you
might notice a gem sparkling on a ring, but you would not, and could not,
see how Raphael convinced you that light was reflecting from the emerald.
A unique new publication, Beyond the Naked Eye reveals some of these details through microphotographs (taken through a microscope) by the National Galleryıs Scientific and Conservation Departments. For the first time the very best of these pictures are gathered together in a beautiful and accessible book. |
